Until the 18th century, a pavilion was commonly understood as a rectangular tent. The word shares its origin with the French papillon – butterfly – suggesting a sense of lightness and transience. This project draws from that original meaning: a simple structure beneath a curved roof.
The roof’s form refers not only to the etymology of the word, but also evokes the gesture of an elegant hat – a familiar image in the typology of the music pavilion.
Material and colour reference the concrete constructions of Robert Maillart. The elongated building respectfully steps back, giving visual prominence to the central octagon at the heart of the square.
The Bürkliplatz itself is not enclosed by hedges or barriers. Instead, a permeable gravel surface subtly distinguishes it from the surrounding asphalt – a minimal gesture that reinforces openness and accessibility.
